What is high potential and gifted education?

Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration

tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire

access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Classrooms

At Mount Riverview Public School, we believe student has potential and we pride ourselves on finding those areas in which they can thrive. Teachers support students to grow their potential and develop their talents through quality differentiation practices, targeted at meeting the needs of individuals and groups of students, and building on their interests. More specifically, we utilise various options for targeted students such as grouping strategies, advanced leaning pathways, acceleration, enrichment, extension, and specialist settings.

School-wide

We offer a diverse range of opportunities for students to develop talents across four domains: intellectual, creative, physical and social-emotional. These opportunities are regularly reviewed and adjusted to reflect the needs and interests of our students, as well as the expertise and experience of our staff and community.

Our students are encouraged to develop leadership skills in various roles throughout their primary school years. These include roles as Futures representatives, members of the Student Representative Council, library monitors, Aboriginal student ambassadors, class leaders, Kindy buddies, assembly hosts, sport house captains and school leadership team.

Creative and performing arts opportunities are constantly evolving. Traditionally, our school provides opportunities in dance, choir, music ensembles and visual art. We offer a range of school-based and wider community activities that support development of our student's creative talents.

Students have high interest in the many opportunities available in sport at our school and achievement at high levels across our region and state is strongly supported. We promote involvement of individuals and teams in various specific sport competitions such as soccer, cricket and netball, as well as events in athletics, swimming and cross country running. Students are also encouraged to trial for representation on zone and regional PSSA teams.

Academic potential is supported beyond our classrooms through extra curricular opportunities, such as Maths Games, public speaking competitions, student newsletter, oral reading competitions, chess club and Films by the Eucalypts.
